Common/Legend Win Oscar for Selma Song

John Legend and hip-hop artist Common won and an Academy Award for their song “Glory” from the film Selma.

Selma is a true story about civil rights activist Martin Luther King and his march in the town of Selma, Alabama.

Taking the opportunity to use his acceptance speech as a political platform, Legend compared the modern Prison for Profit system to slavery over a 150 years ago. “We live in the most incarcerated country in the world,” Legend said. “There are more black men under correctional control today than there were under slavery in 1850.”

Selma was nominated for Best Picture but lost to Michael Keaton’s Birdman.
