It is estimated that close to 100,000 people die every year due to infections they acquired through their stay at the hospital. These Hospital Acquired Infections, or HAI, are preventable as they typically are the results of a hospital staff that has grown complacent and do not practice basic hygiene as simple as washing their hands on a regular basis or wearing gloves before patient/caretaker contact.
There are several different strains of bacteria causing the deadly infections in hospitals, part of their strength lies in their inability to be detected easily and spotted at an early stage of infection.
Staph infections are one of the most common to be found amongst the HAI. The staphylococcus genus of bacteria is typically encountered in improperly stored foods or found in fecal matter.
Alcohol based hand-rubs are adequate in the fight against HAI’s like staph but is no substitute for old fashion soap & warm-water to prevent the spread of infection causing bacteria.
