Pictures of the giant holes appearing in Siberia are so large and ominious that the modern viewer may shrug the image off as some science-fiction CGI effects from a Hollywood blockbuster.
Not so says Russian geologists; whom are now growing concerned. One theory proposes that the craters may be caused by the heating of underground gases due to global warming. These underground gases seem to be coming from the melting land itself.
Siberia is covered in “permafrost” frozen earth, soil and organic material, which as it melts releases methane gas due to the organic material contained within. The methane gas is flammable and could result in explosions possibly as a result of global warming.
Scientists vow to research more in the hopes of predicting and possible preventing further explosions in the future.
