Hollyood has been hitting home-runs when it comes to biographical films about musical artists. Films about Ray Charles, Tina Turner and Biggie Smalls are members of a prestigious Top Ten list of the highest grossing musical biopics of all-time. A film about California’s N.W.A. to be released in the summer of 2015 may just break some new records.
N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) a hip-hop act out of Compton, California broke into the highly competitive music scene in 1986. Members of the five man crew like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube later went on to make successful solo careers for themselves.
The film will star Ice Cube’s own son playing a younger version of himself and will be directed by the talented John Singleton who has previously collaborated with Ice Cube on Boyz n the Hood (1991). Singleton was nominated for the academy award for the film, making him simultaneously the first African-American and the youngest person to do so.
Ice Cube says the music of N.W.A. is “Non-violent protest. The same thing that we was going through in the 80’s with the police the people are going through right now.”
“It’s a good time to tell our story.” says N.W.A. co-founder Dr. Dre. “Some kids from Compton, how we touched the world.”
After several false-starts, the biopic is set to be released on August 14, 2015.
