The world’s first road capable of turning sunlight into energy officially opened for traffic Wednesday in the Netherlands.
The first ever solar road is actually a very long walking, and bike path. The 230 foot long road was constructed in the town of Krommenie.
For now the road is simply a test route for future development by the company SolaRoad.
Congrats to the Netherlands for being a leader in sustainable innovation.
The road way material is made of concrete modules that have solar cells which are covered by a thin, but durable layer of tempered glass.
According to company officials, the energy gathered by the solar panels can power things like Traffic, and street lights as well as homes.
During the three year testing phase, SolaRoad will continue product development, and enhancements according to officials.
